Is Your Child a Mouth Breather? Here’s What Parents Should Know

Mouth breathing, snoring, sleep, and oral habits may be more connected than you think.

Does your child frequently sleep with their mouth open? Snore? Wake up tired even after a full night of sleep? Have trouble keeping their lips closed at rest?

These can be easy things to brush off as little habits, but the way our children breathe and use the muscles of their mouth and face can play an important role in oral function, sleep, and development.

That's where myofunctional therapy comes in.

What Is Myofunctional Therapy?

Myofunctional therapy focuses on the muscles and functions of the mouth, tongue, face, and airway.

Your tongue, lips, cheeks, jaw, and facial muscles all have jobs to do. They work together when you breathe, chew, swallow, speak, and even while you sleep.

When those muscles or patterns aren't functioning efficiently, it can contribute to concerns such as mouth breathing, improper tongue posture, tongue thrusting, difficulty keeping the lips closed, inefficient chewing or swallowing, jaw tension, and other oral habits.

At Snohomish Myo Relief, therapy is personalized to help children and adults develop healthier oral function and breathing patterns.

Signs Parents May Notice

Every child is different, but some of the concerns that may lead families to explore myofunctional therapy include:

  • Frequent mouth breathing
  • Sleeping with the mouth open
  • Snoring or restless sleep
  • Tongue thrusting
  • Thumb or finger sucking
  • Frequent ear infections
  • Prolonged pacifier use
  • Open mouth posture
  • Tongue tie concerns
  • Difficulty with chewing or swallowing
  • Jaw tension
  • Certain speech concerns

Seeing one of these signs doesn't automatically mean your child needs myofunctional therapy. An evaluation can help determine what is happening and what support, if any, may be appropriate.

Starting Healthy Habits Early

Myofunctional therapy isn't just for adults or older children.

Mini Myo

Designed for children ages 3 to 5, Mini Myo uses fun, age appropriate activities to introduce healthy habits involving breathing, chewing, swallowing, and oral development.

Myo Beginnings

For children working to stop thumb sucking, finger sucking, prolonged pacifier use, tongue sucking, or other oral habits, Myo Beginnings provides personalized coaching, encouragement, and support for both children and parents.

Myo Mastery

For children ages 5 and older and adults, Myo Mastery provides a more comprehensive therapy program. It can be appropriate for concerns including mouth breathing, tongue thrust, tongue tie support before and after a procedure, snoring, orthodontic preparation, certain ENT referrals, mild sleep apnea, and posture improvement.

A Local Resource for Snohomish Families

Snohomish Myo Relief was founded by Brianna Forsell, a Snohomish native who spent seven years working as a dental hygienist.

During that time, she repeatedly saw patients struggling with symptoms involving breathing, sleep, and oral function. She became interested in the connections between those concerns and ultimately pursued myofunctional therapy.

“Because I want you to breathe easy and live well.”

Brianna Forsell, Founder of Snohomish Myo Relief

Today, her Snohomish practice works with both children and adults, with a focus on education, personalized care, and helping families better understand oral function and airway health.

Not Sure Where to Start?

You don't have to know if myofunctional therapy is right for your family before reaching out.

Snohomish Myo Relief offers a complimentary Discovery Call where you can discuss your concerns, ask questions, and learn more about how breathing, sleep, oral function, and tongue posture may be connected.

From there, Brianna can help determine if a comprehensive evaluation or another next step makes sense.
