A Halloween Mail Mission for Kids: 5 Cards, 5 People

A Halloween activity that helps Snohomish kids turn five postcards into five personal surprises.

Children usually know exactly who makes school more fun.

It may be the classmate who saves them a seat, the friend with the funniest costume idea or the cousin who always laughs at their jokes.

Halloween gives children an easy reason to tell those people, "I thought of you."

They can choose five people and make a personal card for each one. A child might write about a shared Halloween memory, compliment a costume, ask a funny question or simply draw something for a friend.

That simple idea becomes Mailo’s Halloween Mail Mission: five postcards, five recipients and five chances for a child to make someone feel remembered.

First, choose the five people

The list will be different for every child.

It could be five classmates. It could include a neighbor, a cousin and grandparents who live far away. One card may be for a best friend, while another goes to someone the child would like to know better.

Choosing the recipients is an important part of the activity. Before writing anything, the child has to stop and think about another person.

What makes that friend laugh? What did they do together? What would this particular person enjoy finding inside an envelope?

A costume-themed postcard could inspire:

"Your astronaut costume was my favorite."

A card for a cousin might say:

"I am going to be a vampire this year. What are you going to be?"

The message does not need to be clever or long. It only needs to sound like the child who is sending it.

The postcard helps the child begin

Mailo is TaleMail’s little mail character. His job is to help children notice small things and turn them into real mail.

Each illustrated postcard gives the child a starting point. Children can write one sentence, ask a question or add a drawing. Younger writers can dictate their words to an adult and sign their own name.

There is no reason to complete all five postcards at once. One can be written after school. Another idea may arrive while the family is decorating the house or choosing costumes.

A child who does not know how to begin can try a simple question:

  • What made us laugh together?
  • What do I like about this person?
  • What would I want to ask them about Halloween?

Once a real person is waiting on the other side of the card, finding something to say becomes easier.

Some cards travel. Others arrive by hand.

Cards for classmates, nearby friends or neighbors can be handed directly to them. The child gets to watch someone open an envelope made especially for them.

Cards for distant relatives become a different kind of adventure.

The child helps write the address, adds postage with an adult and takes the envelope to a mailbox or post office. Their message leaves home and begins traveling toward someone they know.

A few days later, Grandma may call about the drawing. A cousin might answer the Halloween question. Someone may even send a card back.

The result is small and real: the child thought of a person, made something for them and followed through.

Then an envelope arrives for the child

With the Complete Halloween Mail Adventure, the child eventually discovers an envelope carrying their own name.

The letter is from a Friendly Ghost.

A parent completes a private questionnaire after ordering and shares details about the child. TaleMail uses that information to create a playful letter written specifically for them.

The Friendly Ghost may know what the child enjoys, something they recently accomplished or another detail that makes them stop and wonder, "How did the ghost know that?"

It is much more personal than a standard letter with the name changed.

Children already know that Santa receives letters and sometimes writes back. Halloween rarely comes through the mailbox in the same way. A personal message from a Friendly Ghost makes the child part of a story they have probably never experienced before.

They began by sending five Halloween surprises into the world. Then Halloween mail found its way back to them.

What families receive

Mailo’s Halloween Postcard Kit includes five illustrated postcards, five colorful envelopes, five Halloween seal stickers and mission guidance from Mailo.

Families can choose the postcard kit, the personalized Friendly Ghost Letter or the Complete Halloween Mail Adventure containing both. Postage for mailing the postcards is purchased separately.

The mission begins with one question:

Who are five people your child would like to surprise this Halloween?
